War Guesser — Pin the Map, Guess the Battle
War Guesser is the pin-drop half of WarAtlas. If you've played GeoGuessr, the mechanic is familiar: you're shown a place and you commit to a spot on the map. The difference is you're not looking at a street — you're given a real battle, and you have to know your history well enough to place it.
How scoring works
- Great-circle distance between your pin and the real site decides the score
- Within 50 km scores the full 1,000. Then it steps down: 750 inside 200 km, 500 inside 500 km, 250 inside 1,000 km, 100 inside 2,000 km, 50 beyond that
- Three attempts per battle. Miss the first and you're shown the year; miss the second and you get the conflict and the region
- Falling back on a second guess costs 50 points and a third costs 100, so the bands reward committing early
- No timer and no penalty for zooming — the map is the puzzle, not a reflex test
Where the battles are
Guessing well means knowing the whole map, not just Europe. The 13,743 battles in the pool break down as:
- Europe: 7,097 battles
- North America: 1,889 battles
- Africa: 1,456 battles
- East & Southeast Asia: 1,356 battles
- South Asia: 659 battles
- Middle East: 533 battles
- South America: 467 battles
- Oceania & Pacific: 189 battles
